UNIT 1 GRAMMAR

WHAT IS GRAMMAR?

        Grammar is how we organized, change parts of words, words and group of words to have meaning. It is used unconsciously by speakers. It includes grammatical forms, parts of speech and grammatical structures.  Grammatical forms concern to how words are made up an presented, eg: the form of superlative adjectives is: define article + short adjective + est. In grammar, we find nine parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs adjectives, conjunctions, determines, prepositions and exclamations. Each of them describe how words behave in sentences.Grammatical structures deal with how grammatical structures are use to convey meaning. We can change the meaning of a word adding affixes (letter added) at the beginning "prefixes" or at the end "suffixes" of a based word

         Grammar is aimed on written language, for this reason is important  focus in form. However we, as teachers, can not teach grammar rules or structures isolated. "Prabhu has tried to show that classroom learners can acquire an L2 grammar nationalistically by participating in meaning- focused tasks" (Sams, L. 2003). Grammar should be teacher in context, according with the intention of the speaker or writer. In the class I would teach: the grammar structure, the grammar form, and what is the function of them in the language. I would apply the focus on form approach: "a new approach to grammar instruction that combines formal instruction and communicative language use" (Hinkel, E., & Fotos, S. 2001). In this way students will use the grammar rules in context of communication.
